	CHAPTER ONE
 INTRODUCTION

EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE. That's such an obvious statement that it's almost unnecessary to say. However, we usually speak about the uniqueness of our children by describing what they "do." This manual is designed to help you understand the uniqueness of your child's essence: the being-ness rather than the doing-ness.
In addition to this manual, our reference text for this material is The Invisible Garment: 30 Spiritual Principles that Weave the Fabric of Human Life (available at www.generosityincorporated.com). In it, author Connie Kaplan makes the radical suggestion that each person "signs a life contract at the moment of birth," a contract containing a specific group of spiritual principles (or influences), and that throughout our lives we "wear" these principles like an invisible undergarment which constantly informs, guides, and girds us.
The model that we have come to call the garment pattern represents the individual's promise to (or contract with) life. This way of thinking suggests that each of us is born to deliver a gift to the world through our beingness. While that gift is primarily defined by one principle (the Sun principle) all of the principles in our contract work together to create a distinctive life pattern. Other systems preach that we are here to work out karma, to be in school and learn lessons, or to fulfill our individual destinies. This system is simpler. It states that we are unique configurations of spiritual energy, here to let Life live itself through us. Our life experiences are the forms through which Spirit delivers the gifts of the soul into the realm of form.
You will need to have The Invisible Garment on hand in order to make use of this manual, because we refer often to the Thirty Principles described there, without much explanation. What we can tell you here is how to construct the picture of your child’s garment as we will focus on it in this book.

 DESCRIPTIONS AND EXAMPLES

EACH CHAPTER IN THIS MANUAL will consist of a description of the topic under discussion and will give one or more specific examples so that you can concretely understand our topic. The basic text is written by the authors, but we have also included descriptions and examples from parents who took a course with us based on the material. We have not used names and are intentionally not identifying the participants or their children for obvious reasons, but we have taken care to be faithful to the messages they have shared with us.

WAYS TO WITNESS
IN EACH CHAPTER we will also make some suggestions about how to witness (i.e., observe) your child's principles at work in his or her life. It's hard to really “see” your child because a parent's eyes are often not “clear.” We see either through "rose-colored" glasses, or we see through eyes that are far too critical and controlling. Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of this work is learning to see a situation by looking at the principle rather than looking directly at behavior.

WAYS TO SUPPORT
IN ADDITION TO WITNESSING our children, it's equally important to support them properly. We will offer suggestions about how to do this, and we will share wisdom with each other on the discussion forum.

EXERCISES
EACH CHAPTER ENDS WITH SUGGESTIONS of how to put this information to work in your parenting style. Some of the suggestions may
not be applicable to your situation, as you would obviously make different adjustments based on the child's age and specific life circumstances.
In addition to this manual, it will be helpful for you to own a copy of Connie Kaplan's book, The Invisible Garment. You will want to refer to it often as you contemplate the meaning of your child's contract with life.
